THOMAS MARTEL
The case behind the name
In 2023, Illinois was shaken by one of the most disturbing animal cruelty cases in recent memory. Thomas Martel was accused of torturing and killing multiple kittens in his care. According to court records, he gave each kitten the same name: Shelly.
Despite evidence involving multiple victims, Martel's case ultimately resulted in a conviction centered on a single kitten. Because Illinois law also allowed him credit for pretrial home electronic monitoring, he served no additional time in prison after sentencing.
